New Tax Regime Explained

BENIN: Apart from the devil from the pit of hell, another hated figure is the taxman and his policy. That is why any increase in tax keeps the adrenalin boiling.

Adams-Oshiomhole

Recently, the Joint Labour Group – the Nigeria Labour Congress, Trade Union Congress and others – visited Governor Adams Oshiomhole of Edo State with anger over what they termed an increment in tax rate. But before the union could explode, the governor took them on what his administration had been doing with tax payers’ money – to finance numerous projects.

He explained to them that what the people saw as tax increase was actually not. In the past, the Tax Board in the state was using the analogue method. This, according to the governor, was outdated and created revenue leakages.

In a situation like this, Oshiomhole argued, those who were promoted continued to pay the old tax rate, while those who were demoted continued on the same PAYE, Pay As You Earn, without moderation.

To remove tax abuses, the state Tax Board was asked to computerise the PAYE but in the last two years, it was not implemented until recently when it came at a time the people were not envisaging.

Since the people were not comfortable with the new system, the governor asked the Board to suspend it, with a promise that it would later be implemented.

Reacting to the labour leaders’ argument that the new tax regime would make it difficult for parents to pay the school fees of their children when they resume, Oshiomhole assured that the era when parents took their children to private schools and paid through their teeth was gradually coming to an end in the state. The new tax regime, according to him, had been having some positive effects.

He specifically mentioned Idia College, one of the oldest schools in the state, which had been renovated and equipped with modern facilities for the use of teachers and students. Before then, students were sitting on the floor to receive lectures.

At Oluwa Primary School which was established in 1933, renovation has almost been completed. Borehole was also added for the use of the school. Also, staff of the Ambrose Alli University in Ekpoma now enjoy the same salary structure with their federal counterparts.

Praise be to God, the people of Edo State should rejoice, because the Masiah has arrived to save us from our nightmare, why should the Labour Congress and other Labour Group complain about taxation in Edo State, when the people Governor Mr Adam Oshiomole has turned Edo State arround 360 degree in less than two years.Whereas we have other governors who has ruled the state for more than thirty years, and could not do anything but robbed the Edo State treasury and bankrupt the state.
What build a Nation and states is taxation, and the people of Edo state are seeing how their taxed money are been used. Mr Adam Oshoimole is a man of vision his vision is not a short term vision, it goes behond his political term in office, As we the Edos always say the good did of Mr Samuel Ogbemudia when he was the military Governor.
More power to you Mr Adam Oshoimole, may the Almighty God continue to bless you, and give you more power to do the right things for Edo State. we love you
    God bless
