I’m ready For Politics

Istrongly believe Malam Nuhu Ribadu will make a brilliant politician. Other than being a seasoned lawyer and administrator, Ribadu is also very fortright. There is no doubt that his incursion into politics will see us into another era of politicking in Nigeria (“I’m ready For Politics,” TheNEWS, 21 June 2010 edition).
Emeka Izema,
Umuahia.

Malam Nuhu Ribadu will be making the greatest mistake of his life by going into politics. Those who are currently goading him on to give it a try have forgotten to tell him how dangerous and damaging politics can be to his reputation. For some of us who admire the anti-corruption warlord, Ribadu is better off as the untainted administrator he has always been. Politics in Nigeria, from the revelations of our leaders, involves a lot of fetish practices, including oath-taking. Is Ribadu ready to swear oath?
Kazeem Ibidoye,
Ilorin.

It is a good thing that people like Ribadu are moving into politics. It will change the way politics is being practised in Nigeria. This will augur well for Nigeria as the charlatans would be gradually phased out by more serious people like Ribadu.
Emmanuel Agbagana,
Owerri.

People should refrain from jumping to the conclusion that since Malam Nuhu Ribadu purportedly did well as the head of the EFCC, he would make a good politician. They’ve forgotten that these are two very different worlds with different objectives. We should not be surprised if, when he eventually goes into politics he becomes a guest of the EFCC. This is because, it is very hard to find a politician who is not corrupt. Are we then saying that our intention is to see Ribadu humiliated after helping to sanitise Nigeria?
Alfred Edosa,
Abuja.

It is not a surprise that the international community accepted Nuhu Ribadu warmly for his brilliance and performance at the EFCC. As the biblical saying goes, a prophet is hardly honoured in his town. This adage best describes Ribadu’s case. The government of the late Umaru Yar’Adua was out to disgrace the anti-corruption czar but as it turned out, God was on the side of the righteous.
Funmi Ayomide,
Lagos.

Your cover interview with Nuhu Ribadu was quite revealing. It was indeed a great victory for Ribadu against those who forced him into self-exile. I had predicted it long ago that Ribadu would still occupy an enviable position in this country. So I was not surprised to read him say, “I’m ready For Politics.”
Taiwo Mogaji,
Epe.

I think Ribadu’s return to the country and his interest in politics will do him no good. Why is he interested in politics that almost took his life? I doubt if he is not back to plot his revenge against those that attempted to destroy him. Nonetheless, I wish him well. Who knows, he might infuse some sanity into the present ugly system.
Adewole Johnson,
Alagbado, Lagos.

Nuhu Ribadu remains one of the finest Nigerians to have occupied public office. He is never afraid to say it as it is. His record as EFCC chaiman was hailed as spotless across the country. His return is welcomed. We need him to keep Farida Waziri on her toes.
Adewole Babatunde,
Akoko-Edo.

I don’t know what Nuhu Ribadu needs in the politics of Nigeria despite the tough time he faced while in office as the chairman of EFCC, which led to his wrongful dismissal from the Nigeria Police Force, though later reinstated. Why is he making politics his last resort? It would be better for him to engage in business rather that mingle with the same politicians that have messed up the country.
Olabanji Lawrence,
Iree.

I write to commend TheNEWS magazine for your interesting interview with Nuhu Ribadu, the man I respect most in Nigeria. I use this medium to welcome him back to the country. And it is my belief that soonest he will hold another esteemed position in this country where he will again distinguish himself. Undoubtedly, he will not disappoint. Welcome, Ribadu.
Bidemi Adeniwura,
Ilesha.

From the interview Ribadu granted your magazine, it is clear that the man is primed for political exploits in Nigeria. It would have been wise for Ribadu to steer clear of the murky waters of Nigerian politics, but he demonstrated in that interview that he’s not only familiar with the problems of the country, but also conversant with the dirty world of Nigerian politicians.
Femi Ibikunle,
Ijero-Ekiti.

My advice to Nuhu Ribadu is that he should leave Nigerian politics alone. My fear is that the powers-that-be in the country would not allow him to succeed in politics. Look at what they did to the late Gani Faewehinmi when he contested the presidency in 2003.
Femi Adewale,
Minna.

Malam Nuhu Ribadu, former chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, did a good job while holding the position, although it is believed in some quarters that he was selective in his investigations. I will vote for him if he offers himself for any elective position in the country. Ribadu is one Nigerian that has proved his mettle beyond question as a patriot.
Olumide Adejobi,
Offa.

With Nuhu Ribadu’s return to the country, every positive-minded Nigerian can heave a sigh of relief. Our corrupt leaders will have to run for cover. Many scandals and crimes will be unveiled. Though Ribadu is not perfect, he brought the requisite checks to our corrupt government. We need more men of integrity like Ribadu.
Abdul Ibrahim,
Gombe.

I knew it would come to this for Ribadu. He is not a clean man. If he was, why did he run away in the first place? All the allegations against him have been dropped, for reasons best known to the government. He should be tried. He has been let loose. That is why he can say he is ready for politics.
Michael Anthony,
Abuja.

What happened to the asset declaration of Ribadu? That will be his undoing in his quest for political office. He appears to be a man of integrity but when he finally becomes a politician, then we can assess his performance. Men like Dimeji Bankole and Ndudi Elumelu have failed the masses when we thought they had our interest at heart.
Henry Chukwu,
Owerri.

I think all Nigerians should embrace Ribadu’s return. Babcock University honoured him on his return. I think he sure deserves an opportunity to serve as a politician. The present administration has done well by reversing the harsh judgment on him.
Amaechi Nwachukwu,
Aba.

I have not seen any sign that Malam Nuhu Ribadu would be spectacular as a politician. I just hope he won’t be selective in dealing with Nigerians as he was when he was boss of the EFCC.
Haruna Usman,
Sokoto.

Why is Nuhu Ribadu’s return being celebrated? Was he not the same person who, while he was boss of EFCC, persecuted the political enemies of his mentor, former president Olusegun Obasanjo?
Chika Omimi,
Warri.

The return of Malam Nuhu Ribadu indeed shows that there is a wind of positive change currently blowing in the country. Certainly, the former anti-corruption czar is set to play a key role in this political dispensation.
Efe Omonode,
Benin-City.

Malam Nuhu Ribadu’s return to the country is a vindication of the good works he did when he was the boss of the EFCC. Now that he has indicated that he is ready to take part in politics, I am very sure Nigerians will support him.
AbdulMalik Haruna,
Ilorin.

Malam Nuhu Ribadu is a man many Nigerians admire for his courage and fortrightness. Now that he is back to participate in politics, there is no doubt he will do very well, just as he performed excellently well while he was boss of the EFCC.
Pius Olemo,
Irrua.

Re: A Speaker Under Fire
Why did it take Independence Ogunewe, a member of the House of Representatives from one of the constituencies in Imo State, this long to fight Speaker Dimeji Bankole? What Ogunewe exhibited was an inordinate ambition to gain undeserved prominence. His actions may not be unconnected with his desire to gain the recognition that has since eluded him. I will advise him to play politics with caution. The Speaker deserves some respect.
Princess Ogedengbe,
Akure.

It is a pity that Nigeria is cursed with corrupt leaders. One would expect that after Dimeji Bankole took over from Patricia Etteh as speaker, he would register his name on a clean slate. His alleged involvement in the N2.3bn car scam has indeed dented his image. Only clearance from the EFCC can redeem his image at this moment.
Peace Ajala,
Iwo.
